KUCHING: The Council of Churches of Malaysia said it joins all Malaysians in expressing great sorrow over the 22 students and two wardens who perished in the fire that gutted Pusat Tahfiz Darul Ittifaqiyah in Kampung Datuk Keramat, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“The Churches wish to convey our deepest sympathies and hold in our prayers the families that are affected.

“We appeal to the authorities to ensure that all schools and charity homes comply strictly with safety regulations and have regular fire drills,” said its general secretary Rev Dr Hermen Shastri in a press statement yesterday.

The tragic fire which occurred yesterday morning horrified Malaysians across the country.
A short-circuit is believed to have started the fire which blocked the only exit route from the students’ hostel, trapping the victims inside the building as there were also grilles across the window.
The students at the centre were all boys, aged 13 to 17.
