KUCHING, Nov 27: Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus raised concerns over the Serian Conference Centre (SCC) becoming a ‘white elephant’ if the cost as well as the terms and conditions of using the facility are not reviewed.
He said the SCC is one of the landmarks in the Serian Division, located next to the State Government Administrative Centre.
“It was completed in 2023 at a cost of RM87 million. However, I understand that the usage conditions for the SCC, including its surrounding compound, are too strict and the costs are too high.
“This has resulted in its utilisation being rather low. We do not want the building to become a ‘white elephant’ in the future,” he said during his debate at the Supply Bill 2026 at the Legislative Assembly (DUS) today.
John highlighted that recent usage of the centre cost nearly RM10,000, including two full days and a night for preparations and rehearsals.
“It is requested that the relevant authorities reassess the approval and permission requirements for its use so that they are appropriate with local factors, local culture, and local practices, and not too rigid,” he said. — DayakDaily
