SIBU, Jan 4: A prison corporal was duped RM2,500 in a Love Scam.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said today that in November last year the 40-year-old complainant got acquainted with a man on Instagram who identified himself as “Mohd Hassan” from Singapore.

“After a week of getting to know each other, they continued their chatting on WhatsApp,” he said.

Stanley said the man told her that he would be sending her US$100,000, jewellery and a handphone.

Then on Dec 29, she received a call from a “customs officer” who informed her that the items had arrived.

She was asked to pay RM2,500 as clearance fee for the items.

Two days later at 9.15pm on Dec 31, she transferred the said amount to an account number provided by the so-called customs officer.

Stanley said the complainant realised that she had been cheated when she was further requested to remit more money.

She lodged a police report on January 3.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. —DayakDaily
