KUCHING, Sept 21: Stakan assemblyman Datuk Hamzah Brahim has called on corporate bodies and private companies to come forward and support the proposed Sarawak Regatta Circuit through sponsorships and strategic cooperation.
He emphasised that the high cost of organising regattas should not fall solely on government or local organisers, but can be lightened through private sector contributions.
“Strategic cooperation will not only ease the burden on organisers but also strengthen corporate social responsibility (CSR) in preserving our cultural heritage,” he said in a statement today.
He was responding to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s proposal to set up a Sarawak Regatta Circuit to better coordinate the many regattas across the State.
Hamzah noted that regatta is not just a sporting event but a tradition passed down since the era of Rajah Charles Brooke in 1872, which unites Sarawakians regardless of race or religion.
As an avid boat racing enthusiast who also leads Pasukan Perahu Udak, Hamzah added that a more structured circuit could stimulate local economies, provide opportunities for small traders and attract international visitors.
He also suggested that Sarawak could emulate the success of Pacu Jalur in Riau, Indonesia, which has gained worldwide recognition, and highlighted the potential for regional participation from Kalimantan and Brunei.
“With proper planning and support, Sarawak’s regatta can be elevated to global prominence while maintaining its cultural roots,” he said.
Hamzah expressed confidence that the regatta circuit, if realised, would become both a milestone in uplifting traditional water sports and a unique attraction that enhances Sarawak’s image on the international stage.
Yesterday (Sept 20), Abang Johari announced that the Sarawak government is exploring the possibility of establishing a regatta circuit to better coordinate the growing number of boat races across the State.
He said the idea arose as many areas have begun organising their own regattas in recent years, with organisers often seeking government support due to the high costs involved. – DayakDaily
