KUCHING, Oct 19: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called on the public to follow in the footsteps of social media content creator Tracey E. Hughes, who voluntarily cleaned up roadside areas to promote public cleanliness and care for the environment.
In a TVS report, Nanta described Tracy’s civic-mindedness as exemplary, saying her initiative should inspire others to help keep the Pan Borneo Highway and other public roads clean and well-maintained.
“We truly welcome anyone to do what Tracy did. In fact, I will be meeting her in Kuching soon to express my appreciation for her civic-mindedness.
“Why not copycat something good like this? Tracy’s effort can inspire others to care for the cleanliness of our roads, whether along the Pan Borneo or other federal routes,” he said to reporters during his visit to the Redline section of the Pan Borneo Highway in Bintulu today.
The Kapit MP added that adopting such positive behaviour not only helps preserve a clean environment but also reflects the community’s maturity in supporting government efforts to maintain public infrastructure in good and safe condition.
In addition, he said the government welcomes active participation from the public in maintaining federal roads and other amenities, in line with the spirit of shared responsibility.
Previously, Nanta planned to consider appointing Tracey and her team as MYJalan ambassadors in Sarawak to expand awareness on road cleanliness and safety.
Meanwhile, on upgrading works, Nanta explained that restoration and strengthening efforts under the Redline segment of the Pan Borneo Highway will be carried out comprehensively, focusing on critical stretches that require immediate repair.
He said the targeted approach is essential to ensure the project, covering a 136-kilometre stretch in Sarawak, is implemented effectively.
“We came to Miri and Bintulu to inspect and assess the Redline areas, referring to sections that need to be rebuilt. We have been briefed on the critical spots and will prioritise those that require urgent repair as approved.
“In Bintulu, the situation is quite critical, and we will continue working closely with the Economy and Finance ministries to secure the necessary funding,” Nanta explained.
Besides that, he assured that continuous monitoring will be conducted to ensure every identified stretch receives prompt attention, safeguarding road users’ safety and ensuring smooth connectivity along Sarawak’s key infrastructure. — DayakDaily
