KUCHING, Oct 22: A 30-year-old man who surrendered himself at the Sekama Police Station on Wednesday has been remanded for a day to help police with their investigation into the arson of a convenience store at Green Road.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan issued the order so that officers could carry out further inquiries. The case falls under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which covers mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a building or structure.
Although the investigating officer had sought a seven-day remand, the court approved only one day.
The suspect is due back in court on Friday (Oct 23).
The Green Road convenience store blaze, which broke out at about 8.30pm at Sin Sin Park, was one of several arson attacks on convenience stores in various districts across Sarawak on Sept 20.
Police had detained five men by Oct 9 to assist with the probe and were still searching for eight other individuals believed to have information on the case.
The suspects are represented by lawyers Daniel Ling and Vanessa Yii. – DayakDaily
