KUCHING, Jan 1: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued a Continuous Rain Warning (Advisory) for 10 divisions in Sarawak, with prolonged rainfall expected to continue until Jan 3.
In a statement today, METMalaysia said the areas affected include Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan, Sarikei and Meradong), Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri and Marudi).
According to METMalaysia, analysis of weather forecast models indicates that a monsoon surge is expected to persist until Jan 5, potentially bringing continuous heavy rain across Sarawak.
The same weather system is also expected to cause strong winds and rough seas over the South China Sea during this period.
“As a result, the Continuous Rain Warning (Advisory) for Sarawak has been updated and will remain in effect until Jan 3,” the department said, adding that a strong wind and rough sea warning for the South China Sea is in force until Jan 2.
Members of the public, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Mariners and coastal communities are also urged to exercise caution due to hazardous sea conditions.
MET Malaysia advised the public to stay informed by referring to its official website at www.met.gov.my, its verified social media channels, or by downloading the myCuaca mobile application for the latest and accurate weather updates. — DayakDaily
