MIRI, Nov 15: Construction on Miri Sentral Bus Terminal is set to start next month.
The RM23.22 million project is scheduled for completion within 26 months.
Earlier today, caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg performed the earth-breaking ceremony at the project site.
The project will sit on a 10,845.7 sq ft piece of land along Jalan Cahaya, at the cross axis of the upcoming Pan Borneo Highway and also future link road to Marudi.
It is hoped that the Miri Sentral Bus Terminal once completed will become an economic hub tailored to the existing urban fabric of Miri City, Miri Airport and the Miri By Pass Highway extending to neighbouring countries such as Brunei and Kalimantan Indonesia.
It would serve as a landmark and transport hub not only for the northern region which links Brunei-Limbang-Lawas-Sabah, but also for the central and southern regions such as Sibu, Kuching and Pontianak.
Once completed, the existing bus terminal in Pujut will be relocated to the new Miri Sentral Bus Terminal.
The new Miri Sentral Bus Terminal would featuring 12 ticketing booths, retail outlets (10 units), 21 bus bay platforms; three car parks for the disabled, two cafe areas, 15 taxi bays, cargo storage, a waiting area and toilets.
Prior to the earth-breaking ceremony, Abang Johari and other guests were briefed on the project site.
According to Miri City Secretary Morshidi Frederick, once the project is completed in 2024, it would help to reduce traffic congestion at the existing terminal bus in Pujut.
“Comparatively, the proposed site is more conducive with the development of the Pan Borneo Highway and future link road,” said Morshidi during the briefing. ā DayakDaily
