KUCHING, Sept 6: The construction of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Teaching Hospital, a 300-bed facility, has reached 66.17 per cent completion, putting it three days ahead of schedule and on track for full completion by Nov 12, 2026.

Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the project, valued at RM485.99 million, is being implemented under a design-and-build contract by Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd, with the Public Works Department’s (JKR) Malaysia Special Project Team 2 serving as the implementing agency.

The centre functions as a daily health facility handling non-critical cases and is equipped with services including X-ray, cough, eye, and geriatric clinics, as well as a medical laboratory and public health examination room. It also includes supporting facilities such as a surau, creche, cafeteria, guardhouse, mechanical and electrical building, and elevated water tank.

Phase 2, currently under construction, covers the main hospital building, which will significantly strengthen Unimas’ teaching and learning ecosystem in medicine and health sciences while serving communities in Samarahan, Kuching, Serian, and Sri Aman divisions.

Ahmad, who inspected the site today, stressed that on-the-ground visits are part of the Works Ministry’s culture to ensure projects are delivered on time and issues are swiftly resolved.

He assured that continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and regular inspections would be carried out to meet the required standards of time, cost, and quality.

“This initiative reflects the spirit of Malaysia Madani, emphasising compassion and care for the people’s needs.

“Once completed, this hospital will not only benefit Unimas students and staff but also provide improved healthcare access for surrounding communities, contributing to a healthier and more prosperous society,” he added. — DayakDaily
