TARAT, Oct 5: A new St Paul’s Chapel in Kampung Tarat Malawi, set to cost RM1.6 million, will be constructed to accommodate up to 800 worshippers.
The groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of the project, was officiated by the Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn on Friday (Oct 4).
The ceremony featured a site blessing led by the Bishop of Kuching (Sarawak & Brunei Darussalam), Reverend Datuk Danald Jute, alongside the Archdeacon of Upper South Sarawak Archdeaconry and Vicar of St John Parish, Taee, Venerable Philip Tauk.
In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sagah, who is also Tarat assemblyman, emphasised that the chapel’s construction is expected to foster unity within the local community, promoting goodwill and religious harmony.
“The new church will be built on a one-acre plot of land, with the main building measuring 160 feet long and 60 feet wide. It will cater to the spiritual needs of the local population,” he said in his speech.
Sagah also announced a grant of RM400,000 from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) in support of the project, underscoring the Sarawak government’s commitment to developing places of worship for all faiths in Sarawak.
He expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, particularly the St Paul’s Chapel Construction Committee, for their dedication to ensuring the project runs smoothly.
He further expressed hope that the church will be completed on time and provide lasting benefits to the community. — DayakDaily
