KUCHING, Aug 21: A private company manager in his 40s from Kuching lost more than RM120,000 after falling victim to an online car purchase scam advertised on social media.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the incident occurred in early August when the victim, while at home, came across a car sale advertisement on the social media platform.
“He clicked on the link provided in the post and was later connected via WhatsApp to an individual posing as an agent of Y and B Expert Sdn Bhd,” he said in a statement today.
Deceived by the suspect’s claims, the victim made several staged money transfers into a bank account given by the scammer, amounting to about RM120,000.
“The victim realised he had been cheated when the suspect continued to demand further payments for the processing of the vehicle purchase. Up until the police report was lodged, the victim had yet to receive the car,” he added.
Following the case, police reminded the public not to be easily taken in by online advertisements offering goods at cheap prices on social media.
“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) advises the public to carry out proper checks before making any online purchases,” Mancha said. — DayakDaily
