KUCHING, Dec 29: Community-based health initiatives continue to play a vital role in promoting active lifestyle and strengthening social cohesion, particularly among senior citizens, in line with Sarawak’s inclusive and people-centric development agenda.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said programmes such as free exercise sessions at Malaysia-China Friendship Park and Saradise Edge, organised by the Mazhong Recreation Association, are helping seniors maintain both physical and mental well-being.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak, said such long-term commitment and voluntary service demonstrates the indispensable role played by community organisations in supporting healthy lifestyles and strengthening community engagement.
“Health does not begin in hospitals, but within communities and through good daily habits,” he said, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
His speech was read by Mayor of Kuching South City Council, Dato Wee Hong Seng, at the 2026 New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner organised by the Mazhong Recreation Association last night.
Dr Sim also noted that when senior citizens have access to suitable platforms for physical activities, stable social networks and environments where they are respected and valued, the benefits extend beyond individuals to society as a whole.
He further emphasised that advancing age should not be regarded as a limitation, pointing out that senior citizens remain a valuable asset whose experience and knowledge can continue to contribute meaningfully to Sarawak’s development when opportunities for participation remain accessible.
Touching on government initiatives, Dr Sim cited the Sarawak Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB), introduced in August 2024, as an example of the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to safeguarding the welfare of senior citizens.
“The scheme provides eligible Sarawak citizens aged 60 and above with an annual outpatient medical benefit of RM500 to improve access to affordable healthcare services,” he said, noting that the initiative reflects the Sarawak Government’s commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that no segment of society is left behind and that the benefits of progress are shared equitably. – DayakDaily
