Commercial crime losses in Sibu surge to RM16 mln in 2023, compared to RM7 mln in 2022

SIBU, Jan 3: Sibu District recorded more than RM16 million in losses due to commercial crime last year.

Sibu District Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that this amount was an increase compared to 2022 which saw a loss of more than RM7 million.


He added that a total of 615 investigation papers were opened compared to 443 in 2022.

“Last year, as many as 391 charges were made with the successful arrest of three suspects believed to be ‘Ah Long,” he said at a monthly parade here today.

Touching on drugs, he said from January to December 2022, drugs valued at over RM1.7 million were confiscated while for the same period in 2023, the estimated value of drug seizures was over RM2.6 million.

“In 2022, we recorded 879 arrests while in 2023 there were 1,122 arrests made,” he said.

Zulkipli also shared that the index crime cases for 2022 were 438 cases with 422 or 96 per cent solved.

“In 2023, the total number of criminal cases were 518 with 445 (86 per cent) of them solved,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division issued more than RM1.4 million in fines with 25,117 summonses issued in 2023.

“For the year 2022, the recorded compounds were as much as RM974,210 with 31,583 summonses issued. For fatal accident statistics in 2023, Sibu District recorded 36 cases compared to 49 cases in 2022,” he said.

Zulkipli was confident that all his personnel are capable of making changes to improve services with hard work and sincerity in giving the best for the team.

“I hope that all the members of IPD Sibu will always be committed, trustworthy and dedicated in carrying out their duties to ensure the well-being and order and safety of the people of Sibu District in general,” he said. — DayakDaily
