KUCHING, Aug 1: The Archaeological Niah National Park Caves Complex has been officially recognised as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) World Heritage Site, marking a significant achievement for Sarawak’s cultural and natural heritage.
This achievement is the result of the unwavering effort and collaboration of various institutions, including the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources (MUDENR) Sarawak, the Sarawak Museum Department, and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), alongside numerous contributors behind the scenes.
“This recognition highlights the global significance of Niah’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
“Your hard work and collaboration have made this remarkable achievement possible, ensuring the preservation of our heritage for future generations,” said SFC in a Facebook post.
On July 27, it was reported that Niah National Park has been listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
MUDENR deputy minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the recognition underlines the global importance of Niah National Park as a site of outstanding universal value.
Meanwhile, on July 28, it was reported that Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that Sarawak is the first in Malaysia to achieve two Unesco World Heritage Site recognitions for the Niah National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park.
Abang Johari expressed his gratitude and congratulatory remark to the Sarawak team for completing the dossier in nominating Niah as the second World Heritage Site. — DayakDaily
