MIRI, April 12: The Smart City System implemented in Miri will be extended to Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu as well as other areas throughout Sarawak, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to Abang Johari, the Smart City System that is currently being used in Miri will provide a solution and, at the same time, improve the services provided by Miri City Council (MCC) for its citizens, including enabling Miri to be connected to the system’s command centre in Kuching.

“In other words, Miri will be connected to Kuching. The same with other cities that we have identified if this system is effective, including Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu, the first four.

“Later on, it will be extended to the other areas where the whole of Sarawak will become a Smart Sarawak (SS),” said Abang Johari in his speech when launching the Miri Smart City event held at a local hotel here today.

Abang Johari assured, by the year 2030, all of the facilities will be available throughout Sarawak once the fiber optic connectivity is in place to enable for a faster speed of connectivity using 5G.

“Of course, during the transition period, a satellite connectivity is being used by utilising the cloud services and you cannot apply for 5G connectivity, because there is what we called as interception in between.

“Once we have lay down our fiber optic, then we can make use of the 5G connection,” he added. — DayakDaily
