KUCHING, Nov 5: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will remain as the caretaker government of Sarawak until a new government is formed.

Caretaker Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said it is a normal transition that the ruling government would continue to administer as caretaker government after the dissolution of the state legislative assembly (DUN).

Asked if there is any limitation to the roles and functions of the caretaker government, he said it should not make any major decision.

“That is why I want to return the mandate back to the people (to determine the next government of the day).

“Even during emergency, without any mandate, we can’t make any major decision. We just run the State as it is because what’s important is that we want to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“So once we get the mandate then we can start our policy implementation,” he told reporters at a press conference held at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Kuching today.

Abang Johari also shared that as the first chief minister to administer Sarawak under a state of emergency due to Covid-19, he had to engage with all the stakeholders before making any decision.

“Of course we have to engage with everybody (taking into account that) the health of the people is also important while at the same time we must practice and uphold our democratic process.

“So when we decide, we have all the input from all the stakeholders,” he said.

The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has proclaimed that the DUN is dissolved with effect from Nov 3, 2021 which would pave the way for Sarawak to hold its election within 60 days as the term of the current DUN had expired in June 2021. — DayakDaily
