KUCHING, June 3: A rare sighting of what is believed to be a clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) on the Matu-Igan road near Daro has captivated netizens after a video showing the elusive wild cat calmly lingering on the road went viral on social media.

The 23-second footage, uploaded by Facebook user Saat Majuni yesterday (June 2), shows the uniquely patterned animal appearing undisturbed and seemingly feeding on something on the road around 4.30pm, according to a report by TVS.

What startled viewers even more was the animal’s calm demeanor—it did not flee despite being filmed from a car at close range.

The clip quickly drew widespread attention, with many netizens expressing awe at the encounter with the rarely-seen species.

“Rare sighting, hardly ever come across something like this,” one commented, while another remarked, “So tame, didn’t even run.”

The clouded leopard is classified as a ‘Totally Protected’ species in Sarawak, according to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation.

Known for its secretive and solitary nature, the animal is typically nocturnal and avoids human presence—making daytime encounters like this exceptionally uncommon.

Wildlife authorities have yet to issue an official response to the video, but the footage has sparked renewed interest in Sarawak’s rich and fragile biodiversity. — DayakDaily
