BA’KELALAN, Nov 17: More than 2,500 villagers in Ba’kelalan, Long Semadoh, Long Sukang and Pa’kapulu will soon enjoy clean treated water after the water treatment plant projects in their respective areas are completed by the end of 2024.

In a back-to-back ceremony to officiate the project which will start soon at each of these villages today, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the projects were part of the 160 projects under Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) which has been allocated with RM1.5 billion by the Sarawak government to expedite rural infrastructure development.

Apart from that, he added that there were also a few mega projects to be launched in the Lawas division such as the new Lawas airport and the 87km Northern Coastal Highway project which are expected to start construction in the first and second quarter of next year, respectively.

Awang Tengah, who is also the Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, reiterated that this would create many job opportunities for the locals.

“We also have plans to develop the petrochemical project in Lawas where we are looking at constructing an integrated petrochemical refinery complex with an investment worth USD5 billion.

“The joint border development has also been approved by the Sarawak government for Ba’kelalan in the last budget speech and this will enhance trade and investment between the countries.

“At the same time, the local plan for Ba’kelalan has also been finalised too,” he said in a statement today.

Awang Tengah emphasised that all these development projects showed the far sightedness of the State government in developing Sarawak to become a high income and developed State by 2030. — DayakDaily
