KUCHING, Oct 21: Civil servants have been prohibited from using the Waze navigation app with immediate effect over concerns about potential security risks, following a decision by the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN).
According to a Bernama report, Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said in a letter dated Oct 20 that the decision was made at the JKSN Meeting No. 3 of 2026, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday.
The directive was addressed to all ministry secretaries-general, heads of federal departments, management heads of federal statutory bodies, state government secretaries and heads of management of local authorities.
The decision followed concerns that using Waze could expose users’ information and movement data to security risks, as the app is subject to Israeli government laws, the letter stated.
Shamsul Azri instructed all secretaries-general and department heads to ensure the directive was communicated to officers under their supervision, as well as relevant agencies and departments, for immediate implementation.
He also called for their cooperation and serious attention to ensure full compliance with the directive at all ministry, department and agency levels. – DayakDaily
