Chong: GPS government should stop playing politics with management of Covid-19

KUCHING, Oct 19: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen is calling on the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to “stop playing politics” with the management of the Covid-19 following the State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) decision on Oct 16, requiring non-Sarawakians entering the State to apply through the EnterSarawak app.

He called on the State government to make a decision based on science and medical data, and not on what he termed as “impulses and political consideration”.

Chong believed that imposing an added measure affecting non-Sarawakians entering Sarawak was not based on science and medical data, but on sheer political sentiment.

He asserted that Covid-19 does not differentiate between Sarawakians and non-Sarawakians.

“So far, despite all the extra EnterSarawak app standard operating procedures (SOP) and the quarantine imposed on those returning or coming from West Malaysia to Sarawak, Sarawak still has the highest infection cases in the country in the last two months.

Chong believed the Sarawak government is adopting the “less testing, less infections” strategy to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.

He opined that the strategy was adopted merely to justify the calling of the 12th Sarawak Election (PRN12) before 18 year-old voters will be eligible to cast their votes after December 2021.

The Kota Sentosa assemblyman questioned why the Sarawak government has imposed the extra control for entry into Sarawak for non-Sarawakian Malaysians while the country is moving from the pandemic to endemic phase of Covid-19, and the National Recovery Council has decided to gradually open up the borders to save the country’s economy. — DayakDaily
