KUCHING, Nov 20: The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing Weiping, has praised Sarawak’s vibrant, multicultural food landscape, calling it a rich tapestry shaped significantly by generations of Chinese community contributions.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Xing said the Chinese diaspora has long enriched Sarawak’s culinary identity, with iconic dishes such as Kompia and Kolo Mee tracing their roots to early Chinese settlers.
“Chinese restaurants now flourish in every town across the State, offering both time-honoured staples and modern fusion creations that continue to attract local and international diners,” he said when speaking at the inaugural “Flavours of Sarawak, Fellowship of Culinary Friends” dinner on Wednesday night (Nov 19).
Highlighting Kuching’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, Xing said the global recognition reflects Sarawak’s diverse food traditions and strong community heritage.
He also lauded the annual Kuching Festival, which draws visitors from around the world and showcases the city’s multicultural charm through its celebrated food offerings.
Xing encouraged chefs, restaurateurs and F&B practitioners to continue preserving authentic flavours while embracing innovation and upskilling.
He added that culinary exchange remains a meaningful pathway for friendship and cooperation, inviting Sarawak’s culinary professionals to visit China for study trips, skills development and collaborative ventures.
“Food is a powerful bridge that deepens understanding between our peoples,” he said, expressing appreciation to those in Sarawak’s culinary industry who continue to keep Chinese culinary heritage alive.
