KUCHING, March 1: China is calling on the Sarawak government to set up a representative office in the country as soon as possible to promote and enhance economic and trade collaborations.
Consul General of the People’s Reupublic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping emphasised that Sarawak, being the third largest State in Malaysia, offers ample opportunities for Chinese enterprises.
He highlighted that Sarawak’s unique position in Malaysia and its pivotal role in Sino-Malaysia relations, particularly under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has accelerated China-Sarawak relations across various sectors, including bilateral exchanges, economic and trade cooperation, education and social exchanges.
“Currently, China-Sarawak collaboration in infrastructure development is escalating, branching into high-end manufacturing, clean energy, the digital economy, and other fields.
“We must further amplify bilateral exchanges, leveraging the existing Friendship City relations between Sarawak and three Chinese provinces along with over 30 cities. These platforms should be maximised to foster deeper mutual understanding and expand exchanges and collaborations in diverse fields,” he called on.
Xing delivered these remarks during the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Sarawak (ACCCIS) Chinese New Year celebration and the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations gala dinner at Imperial Hotel, last night (Feb 29).
The event was attended by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, representing the Premier of Sarawak.
Xing emphasised that China is looking forward to the autonomous rapid transit (ART), ports, smart city, digital economy and new energy development as opportunities to promote the participation of more Chinese equipment manufacturing and technology enterprises in Sarawak’s development.
He envisioned elevating economic and trade cooperation to help Sarawak achieves its 2030 development goals.
Xing expressed optimism in bolstering trade cooperation, given that Sarawak has its own ports, upcoming own airline as well as ongoing enhancements in its logistic facilities.
He also advocated for deeper educational collaboration, recognising the pivotal role of talent development in regional progress.
“We are willing to work with Sarawak to attract prestigious Chinese universities to the region, facilitate partnerships between Sarawak and China universities, and offer more educational opportunities for Sarawakian students in China,” he affirmed.
