KOTA SAMARAHAN, Feb 2: Sarawak has the potential to become the first among Malaysian states to complete the Central Database Hub (PADU) registrations.

Chief Statistician of Malaysia, Dato Sri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, stated that Sarawak is currently the second nationwide with the largest number of PADU registrations at 310,000 as of yesterday (Feb 1), after Selangor with 380,000.

Sarawak’s current record, he said, represented 15 per cent of the total updated data on 1.97 million Malaysians residing in the State based on administrative data ranging from 2021 to 2023.

“What’s interesting about Sarawak is that if we look at the percentage based on the population, Sarawak only has about 1.97 million residents. Therefore, the record of 310,000 registrations is actually among the highest.

“I believe the numbers will increase rapidly, and Sarawak may be among the first States to complete PADU registrations,” he told reporters after visiting the PADU booth at Rural Entrepreneur Carnival (KUD) at Halaman Kota Samarahan here today.

In addition, he believed that with the cooperation from the Sarawak government under the premiership of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the elected representatives, Sarawak would have no problem updating her citizens’ socio-economy profiles in PADU by March 30, 2024.

Uzir further said in general, the majority of the PADU registrations comprised senior citizens rather than the youths.

“We believe that this trend was contributed by the fact that there is a better reception among senior citizens for PADU registrations when we go to ground and implement outreach programmes in the rural areas.

“Meanwhile, among the tech-savvy generation (youth), there is a tendency to procrastinate because the deadline is on March 31. Therefore, this is one of the factors that contributed to slow registration among the youths compared to the senior citizens and those who are not very IT literate.

“However, I hope that those who are able to register early would do so as soon as possible because we want to ensure that there would be no online traffic occurrence during last minute registrations,” he explained. — DayakDaily
