KUCHING, Oct 10: Persatuan Catur Bahagian Kuching (PCBK) has announce its inaugural tournament, the Kuching Chess Rapid Open 2025, held at AEON Mall Kuching (South Court, Ground Floor) starting from 10am to 6.30pm on Oct 19.
PCBK president Chuang Kuang Hong said the event has received strong support from Sarawak including Penang, Johor, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur with over 120 players and 150 spectators are expected to join.
“Through this tournament, we aim not only to promote chess as a competitive sport but also to nurture strategic thinking, discipline, and community spirit.
“The strong response from players across Malaysia shows that Kuching has great potential to become a hub for chess development,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 9).
There are eight categories in total — Open, Under-18, Under-12, Women, Veteran, Persons with Disabilities (OKU), Government Servants, and Youngest Rising Stars — with RM4,000 in cash prizes alongside trophies and certificates.
Interested participants may still register for a nominal fee of RM20 by scanning the QR code provided on the event poster or contacting the designated person-in-charge.
Besides that, the opening will be officiated by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin with Member of Parliament Tanjong Manis and PCBK patron Yusuf Abd Wahab officiating the closing and presenting the awards.
The Kuching Chess Rapid Open 2025 represents PCBK’s commitment to shaping minds, building champions, and strengthening community engagement through chess.
