KUCHING, Sept 25: Fancy joining a mini marathon, while wearing a tutu and raise funds for charity at the same time?

The Pink & Teal Women’s Mini Marathon will be held on Oct 27, at 5am at the Old DUN complex in Petra Jaya.

Managed by GRIT Event Management, the run aims at not only to raise public awareness about the importance of breast and cervical screening, but also getting participants to have a lot of fun doing it.

“With the funds raised, Pink & Teal EmpowHER, a charity non-government organisation (NGO), can continue bringing breast and cervical cancer screenings to the women of Sarawak through their rural outreach programmes and activities,” the event organiser said in a statement.

Pink & Teal EmpowHER founding chairperson Dr Abigail Jerip conducting a cervical screening during its outreach programme in Simuti. Screenings are often carried out in the communal areas of the villages – the balais, ruais, and remins; in makeshift spaces created with clothes pegs and bed sheets.

Alongside the two competitive races of 10km and 21km, with a virtual run option for those outside Kuching, there are also fun runs including a 300m high heel dash, a 1km baby stroller and baby-wearing walk, as well as a 5km run.

All participants for the fun run categories will get a free tutu, t-shirt and medal.

Top runners in the 10km and 21km are in the running for prizes, as well as a finisher’s shirt for the 21km participants.

“Virtual run participants will get the run t-shirt, a medal and postage within Malaysia,” the statement continued.

In addition, the event will also have seven Pink & Teal Men – who will run in tutus, wigs and high heels to fundraise for Pink & Teal EmpowHer, should a certain level of donation be pledged in an auction.

Organisers hope to attract about 2,000 participants to the event.

Online registration closes on Sept 26, but limited slots may be available up until Oct 5.
