KUCHING, Oct 16: The Ministry of Education (MOE) will introduce Character Education as a new subject under the 2027 school curriculum, making it the core foundation of Malaysia’s education system starting next year.

In a TVS news, Minister of Education Fadhlina Sidek said the new curriculum will be implemented in stages, beginning at the preschool level.

“Character Education will be the heart of the new curriculum beginning in 2026, emphasising values, morals, and personal development as integral parts of our education system,” she said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

She was responding to a supplementary question from Perikatan Nasional’s Temerloh MP Salamiah Mohd Nor regarding the government’s plans to develop a curriculum centred on personality, identity, and noble values.

Fadhlina explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen students’ moral and ethical foundations through formal education.

Meanwhile, addressing remarks made by the Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam, who recently said that negative issues in schools were being “swept under the carpet”, Fadhlina clarified that his statement was misunderstood.

“What he meant was that certain incidents in schools have already been reported to relevant authorities, such as teachers, administrators, counsellors, district education offices or state education departments, but were perceived as minor, not serious, or temporary in nature,” she explained.

She added that such perceptions often led to minimal follow-up or inadequate investigation.

“This situation has caused some cases to persist and escalate into more serious problems over time,” she said. — DayakDaily
