KUCHING, June 8: Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) southern zone publicity director Chai Kueh Khun urges the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunication companies (telcos) to provide discounts for Internet and mobile service charges.

Chai in a press statement today said the Internet is a necessity especially during the Covid-19 pandemic to enable people to stay connected with each other and for online classes to be conducted.

However, he has gathered from feeeback that Internet connectivity in rural and semi-rural areas is poor, adding that some rural folks had missed their vaccination appointments due to poor Internet connectivity.

“To curb the spread of the pandemic, rakyat have been advised to do “online seasonal celebration” and online video greeting to relatives and friends.

“Given that schools are ordered to close, and students and teachers have to rely on online classrooms for educating our children; businesses have to conduct their meetings online, the Internet is a must.

“And it would be so appropriate for telco and Internet providers to reciprocate and lessen the financial burden of their faithful customers by reducing their access fees.

“We are absolutely dismayed that until now all the Internet providers, the telcos, have not reciprocated in such a goodwill gesture to lower the subscription fees even for a little bit,” Chai said.

He noted that there were discounts offered for other utilities such as electricity and water tariffs.

Thus, Chai hoped that MCMC and telcos can provide Internet charge discounts for users during the current Covid-19 pandemic to reduce their financial burden.— DayakDaily
