Centexs in talks with Japanese firm to prepare training modules for aviation fuel production using microalgae

KUCHING, Jan 11: Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) is in talks with a Japanese firm which has been working with Sarawak Biodiversity Centre to prepare training modules on the production of aviation fuel from microalgae.

Centexs chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani said this is to prepare Centexs following the launching of its Green Energy Lab with state-of-the-art facilities that will be used not only for training but also as testbeds.


The Green Energy Lab was officiated at by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in conjunction with Centexs’ 7th Convocation Ceremony at Centexs Kuching in Santubong here today.

Apart from that, Mohamad Morshidi revealed that Centexs is also collaborating with Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda) Malaysia.

“With this collaboration, Centexs would be compliant to Seda’s existing learning syllabus and together, we could drive the new solar markets and opportunities in the solar industry,” he said when addressing the convocation ceremony which was streamed live through Sarawak Public Communications Unit’s (Ukas) social medial channel today.

Mohamad Morshidi emphasised that Centexs is aligning its training and programmes to help graduates and workers gain green skills and competencies which will enable them to participate fully in the emerging green economy that Sarawak has embarked on, including the energy industry.

Since its inception, he said Centexs is driven by Sarawak’s economic progression starting from the oil and gas, to renewable energy, Pan Borneo Highway, digital economy and now heading towards the hydrogen economy.

“In line with Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, Centexs is taking a proactive approach to understand and search for industry needs and to help them progress by supplying talent, and train them to fulfill the needs of green energy development in Sarawak.

“In understanding the green energy industry and related training, it is important to equip our local talents with relevant hands-on training to enable seamless integration into the industry workforce,” he added.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,239 graduates with 971 from the Industry Academy and 268 from the Digital Academy will receive their competency-based certificates in the three-day convocation ceremony which started today.

These graduates have completed their training in 39 out of 64 programmes offered by Centexs with focus areas in Digital, Oil and Gas, Electrical, Construction, Smart and Precision Farming, Fashion Technology, Heritage, Hospitality and Tourism.

These programmes are both national and internationally certified by industry leaders including Schlumberger (SLB), TWI CSWIP, Huawei, EON Reality, Keysight and others. ā€” DayakDaily
