KUCHING, Sept 30: The Iban and Kadazan languages are now included on the Welcome Wall at the Kuala Lumpur Tower— signifying recognition of Malaysia’s indigenous languages in a bid to celebrate the nation’s cultural diversity.
Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching, as reported by TVS, said the update was made following concerns over Tamil’s exclusion, and that the government also used the opportunity to add Iban and Kadazan as symbols of Malaysia’s national identity.
“It’s not just the addition of Tamil to the Welcome Wall, but we also included Iban and Kadazan, which are among the languages of Malaysia.
“If we can display international languages such as Japanese and Arabic, it is even more important for us to include Iban and Kadazan,” she stated to reporters after visiting KL Tower today.
She added that the Welcome Wall had remained unchanged since it was first installed, despite already featuring over 20 international languages including Japanese, Arabic, Mandarin, and English.
She noted that the upgrade affirms the government’s inclusive approach, honours Malaysia’s multicultural heritage, and strengthens pride in KL Tower as a national icon. — DayakDaily
