MIRI, June 6: The remains of Corporal (R) Etin Jam, an 83-year-old recipient of the prestigious Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP) medal, were flown from Miri to Kuching for a full State funeral ceremony earlier this morning.

The casket, carried by eight police pallbearers led by Sub Inspector Zakaria Pani, departed from the residence of Etin’s eldest daughter at Lot 2708 Spring Riam, Miri, at 8.30am.

The hearse, escorted to Miri Airport, transferred the casket to a Hercule aircraft (C-130) of the Royal Malaysian Airforce for the flight to Kuching.

Accompanying the remains were Etin’s three daughters and their spouses.

The solemn event also saw the presence of Miri Deputy Police Superintendent Mohd Sabri Zainol.

Etin’s eldest daughter, Linda Nacha, expressed her gratitude to the State government for their assistance following her father’s passing at the age of 83.

“We are deeply thankful for the support and honor given to our father,” she said.

Etin, the last surviving recipient of the SP medal from Sarawak, passed away on June 4 at Miri Hospital, succumbing to lung cancer complications at 6:49am.

He had been hospitalised since May 28 for treatment.

Born on Dec 31, 1940, in Lubok Antu, Simanggang, Sarawak, Etin’s life was marked by extraordinary bravery and dedication.

He joined the Malaysian Police Force on Feb 27, 1963, and rose to the rank of Corporal before retiring on Dec 31, 1995.

His most notable act of valour occurred on April 29, 1972, during an ambush by communist insurgents while escorting explosives for the Public Works Department at Mile 51 Jalan Oya area, Sibu.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, Etin and his unit successfully defended their convoy, earning him Malaysia’s highest honour on July 6, 1972.

Etin’s legacy as a courageous hero and dedicated public servant will be remembered and honoured in the State funeral ceremony, celebrating his life and contributions to the nation. — DayakDaily
