KUCHING, Sept 11: Police are investigating the car carrying three men that skidded and plunged into a river beneath Satok Bridge, near Kubah Ria on Wednesday (Sept 10) evening, under Section Section 44(1A)(A) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs causing injury.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said one of the men, who was seated at the back, fled the scene immediately after the crash and has yet to be identified.
“The accident, which occurred at about 6.40pm yesterday, happened when the BMW car, believed to have lost control, rammed into the concrete divider of a bridge before veering into the opposite lane, crashing into a metal barrier and ending up in the river.
“The driver, a local man in his 30s, was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment, while the front passenger, a man in his 40s, was taken to Gita Police Station for safety reasons,” he said in a statement shared by Sarawak Edition today.
If convicted under Section 44(1A)(A), the driver faces imprisonment of not less than seven years and up to 10 years, as well as a fine of not less than RM30,000 and not more than RM50,000.
