KUCHING, Dec 31: A single vehicle crash due to drunk driving at Lorong Stutong near RH Plaza at 2am today left a 20-year-old man dead while the driver and another passenger in the back seat are critically injured.
Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah reported that the car, which was heading towards the BDC roundabout from Saradise crashed into a tree early this morning.
“As a result of the crash, the front seat passenger was certified dead at the scene due to internal body injuries.
“The driver and another back seat passenger, aged 22 and 21-years-old respectively, were severely injured. They were rushed to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH),” he said in a statement today.
Ahsmon added that initial investigation found that the driver of the car was driving under the influence of alcohol that led him to lose control of the vehicle and veer off the road.
“The case is being investigated under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act, 1987 for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and causing death.
“If convicted, the offender faces a jail term of not less than 10 years and a fine of at least RM50,000,” he said.
A post mortem has been scheduled tomorrow (Jan 1, 2023) at about 9am at SGH.
The police advised the public, especially motorists, to stay focused and be extra cautious when driving and abide by the road regulations and law to prevent any untoward road accidents.
The public are also warned not to drive after drinking as doing so significantly increases the risk of being in an accident and endangeres the lives of other road users. — DayakDaily
