Canteen operator arrested for allegedly running illegal betting scheme in Pakan

The suspect was arrested during a raid by police.

JULAU, Feb 11: A canteen operator has been detained for allegedly selling illegal lottery tickets in Pakan yesterday evening.

The 43-year-old suspect was arrested in an ‘Op Dadu’ raid carried out by a police team from the Julau District Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) at a Kasa canteen premises in Jalan Nanga Wak, Pakan at 3pm.

Julau District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Andam Sulin said the suspect is believed to have used his business premises to carry out the illegal betting activity for about two months.

Apart from that, the initial investigation by the police also found that the suspect also organised online gambling activities in the canteen.

He said the police also confiscated various several items including a mobile phone, a mobile printer, a piece of paper with lottery numbers printed on it and RM175.

He revealed that the suspect had carried out the sale of the public lottery for the buyer’s market in the rural area of ​​Pakan.

“Further investigation by the police also found that the suspect was able to earn an average profit of RM250 a day,” he said.

The case is being investigated under section 4 (1) (c) of the Common Gambling House Act (ARJT) 1953.

The offense carries a fine of RM5000 to RM50,000 and imprisonment for up to three years if convicted.

The case is also being investigated under Section 4 (A) (a) of the same act and is liable to a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM200,000 and imprisonment of not more than five years if convicted. — DayakDaily
