KUCHING, Dec 18: Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (Cahya Mata) today broke ground on its RM673 million Clinker Line 2 project at Mambong, a major expansion that will double the group’s clinker production capacity and strengthen Sarawak’s cement supply resilience.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, commended Cahya Mata for taking bold and innovative steps towards greener production, saying the Clinker Line 2 project aligns with Sarawak’s long-term sustainable development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“I must congratulate Cahya Mata for your bold step in using recovered waste as part of your energy, and also in producing eco-cement, which is the material we need now to balance the effects of carbon emissions and to move towards a net-zero carbon emissions goal.
“That means you are able to balance and equalise carbon emissions with the use of renewable or sustainable materials in the production process, and for that I must commend Cahya Mata for your innovative process,” he said at the Clinker Line 2 project’s groundbreaking ceremony at the site today.

Meanwhile, Cahya Mata Group Managing Director Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, in his speech earlier, said the project will incorporate the latest technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, including through the use of alternative raw materials and fuels from local sources.
“Our factory will be equipped with waste heat recovery system technology, which is capable of producing approximately six megawatts (MW) of clean energy.
“Along with that, a more advanced dust filtration system will be used to ensure that dust emissions are well below the regulatory limits set by the relevant authorities,” he explained.
The Clinker Line 2 project, undertaken through its wholly-owned subsidiary Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd, will have a production capacity of up to 6,000 metric tonnes per day, increasing the group’s annual clinker output from 900,000 metric tonnes to 1.9 million metric tonnes once completed.
Construction is expected to take two years, with commissioning targeted for the second quarter of 2027. Once operational, the facility will supply clinker to Cahya Mata Cement’s grinding plants across Sarawak, strengthening its integrated production system.
The construction works are being carried out by Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of China’s Tianjin Cement Industry Design & Research Institute, which has been appointed as the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contractor.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability (MEESty) Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; Deputy Minister of Transport (Aviation and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil; Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo; Cahya Mata Group Chairman General (R) Dato’ Seri Diraja Tan Sri (Dr.) Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin; and non-executive director Dato’ Mat Hassan Esa. – DayakDaily
