SIBU, Aug 26: A cafe operator has been fined RM20,000 in default one month’s jail by the Magistrate’s Court today for selling illegal online gambling credit.
The accused, Eric Lau Sie Hann was charged under Section 4A (a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1952 which provides for a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM200,000 plus a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years.
According to the brief facts of the case, at about 3.40pm on Aug 11, a police team went to a cafe at Jalan Teku to conduct a raid.
Upon inspection, they found a handphone which was used to reload credit for illegal online gambling owned by the accused.
Lau, 21, was subsequently arrested and the handphone was also seized from him for investigation.
In another case at the same court, a motorist, Tiong Chiong Lee was slapped with a fine of RM10,000 and one day imprisonment for driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The offence under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 was committed at 10.20pm on Aug 13 at Channel Road.
Magistration Mohd Syukri Mokhtar also ordered that the accused’s driving license be cancelled and also disqualified him from holding one for a period of two years starting Aug 26.
Both Lau and Tiong paid for the fine. — DayakDaily
