Businessman fined RM3,000 for illegal possession of handgun, bullets

KUCHING, April 13: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a businessman to a fine of RM3,000 to a charge of illegally possessing a 9mm handgun and 16 9mm bullets.

Chong Chuan Wee, 43, pleaded guilty to both charges framed under Section 8(a) of the Firearm Act 1960, which carries maximum imprisonment of seven years or a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah sentenced the accused to a fine of RM1,500 or in default to two months imprisonment for each charge.

According to the charges, the accused was found possessing a 9mm handgun and 16 9mm bullets without a permit under Section 4 of the Firearm Act 1960, in front of a house in Rock Road, at about 11am on Sept 28, 2005.

Upon police investigation, it was found that the handgun was self-made and functioning well.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
