SIBU, July 2: The whole of Sibu town has been without water since 9pm last night due to leaking from a main pipe.

According to Sibu Water Board Deputy General Manager Lau Pon Yan, a 750mm mild steel main pipe located at Jalan Salim burst yesterday, causing one of the most serious water supply interruptions in the history of Sibu.

“The repair work started at 9pm last night and the repair works are still in progress,” he said.

The board had earlier anticipated that water supply would be restored at 7am today. Since the leak is at the bottom of the pipe, the repairwork will take longer.

The soft ground condition and remaining water inside the pipeline is also making welding work difficult .

Both Salim and Bukit Lima Treatment Plant pumping been stopped.

“In addition, the cracking is at the bottom of the pipeline which mean we have to fully drain out the water from pipeline in order to start the welding work for repair,” said Lau.

SUPP Dudong chairman, Wong Ching Yong, and a member, Benjamin Tian, went for a joint site inspection with Lau Pon Yan.

Lau assured that water supply will be back to normal later in the day.ā€”DayakDaily
