Bungey 2 currently largest active cluster in Sarawak, adds 48 more cases to bring total to 1,153

KUCHING, Sept 8: The Bungey 2 wedding cluster in Betong is currently the largest active Covid-19 cluster in Sarawak and the State’s second biggest since the pandemic began, accumulating a total of 1,153 cases after 48 more cases were added today.

The Bungey 2 Cluster has also reported eight deaths so far and presently has 535 active cases.

A total of 1,350 individuals have been swabbed, whereby 44 have tested negative and 153 are awaiting lab test results.

The Pasai funeral cluster in Sibu remains Sarawak’s largest and most prolific cluster to date as it rampaged through Sarawak for nearly four months earlier this year, resulting in 2,693 cases and 29 deaths. It was declared officially ended on April 13.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today, revealed that Bungey 2 is among the 11 active clusters in Sarawak which reported an increase in infections with a total of 163 cases, contributing to today’s daily case count of 3,100.

By cluster, the KM20 Jalan Betong Cluster, also in Betong, remained the top contributor of new cases for the second consecutive day as it picked up 41 more cases.

This pushed the cluster’s total to 394 cases, out of which 381 are still active.

It is a workplace cluster involving the workers’ quarters of a construction company. A total of 500 individuals have been swabbed, out of which 43 have tested negative and 63 are awaiting lab test results.

The new community clusters declared today comprised the Lemujan Cluster in Pakan linked to a longhouse under lockdown and the Pasar Matu Cluster in Matu linked to a food outlet. They recorded an increase in new infections with 37 cases and nine cases respectively.

The remaining clusters which saw gains today comprise the Galaxy Cluster in Bintulu and Industry Jalan Semeba Cluster in Kuching (7 cases each); Kampung Sikog Cluster in Kuching (6 cases); Pinang Jawa Cluster in Kuching (3 cases); Telok Batu Cluster in Meradong and Bandar Baru Mukah Cluster in Mukah (2 cases each); and Annah Rais Cluster in Kuching has one more case.
