Bung Bratak Day on May 1 cancelled amid Covid-19 outbreak

Dato Peter Minos

KUCHING, March 16: One of the Bidayuh community’s annual cultural celebration, the Bung Bratak Day festival scheduled on May 1, has been cancelled.

Bung Bratak Heritage Association chairman, Datuk Peter Minos, the event has to be cancelled due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in the country.

“Because of the current coronavirus menace and problem, as well as following state government’s advice, the annual Bung Bratak Day on May 1 this year is cancelled.

“Even though this is a very popular historical-cultural annual event, especially for the Bidayuhs of the Jagoi-Bratak group of 35 villages in the Bau and Lundu districts, BBHA feels that the cancellation is the wise thing to do.

“When things get better, the function will surely be held next year on May 1 as well,” Minos, who was also the organising chairman, said in a statement.

He added the association must adhere to the state government’s advice on Covid-19 matters for the good of all.

He believed that everyone, be it in the public or private sector, must do their part by cooperating with the government on tackling and getting rid of Covid-19.

“The whole world is now under threat and attack by Covid-19. This is a very serious matter.

“It is sad to hear that deaths have occurred in China, Italy and many other nations caused by the highly dangerous and contagious Covid-19. Let us pray and hope that there will be no death (due to Covid-19) in Malaysia,” he continued. — DayakDaily
