KUCHING, Nov 14: Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus has urged the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak to consider reintroducing Bible studies in primary schools across the State.
Reflecting on Sarawak’s education history, John highlighted the role of Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Methodist missionaries who began the early Christian mission during the Brooke rule in pre-colonial Sarawak.
He emphasised that the missionaries contributed to a culture of tolerance and respect for different faiths and cultures, which became an integral part of Sarawak’s social fabric, unpolluted by today’s divisive politics.
“During the colonial era and beyond, Bible studies were one of the main subjects in schools, examined, taught and open to all students, regardless of their background, at that time.
“However, today, such subjects have become a part of our educational history. I hope the State Education Ministry can revisit this and consider reintroducing biblical studies so that young students, like those learning about other religions, can be educated on this subject from an early age,” he proposed when participating in the Sarawak Budget 2025 debat in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
John believed that this initiative would further promote tolerance and spiritual development among the younger generation.
“I trust that the Sarawak government, through its ministry, will look into this matter. I place great hope on them,” he added. — DayakDaily
