SIBU, May 13: A proposal has been made to turn the deserted Rejang Esplanade into a youth park.

Speaking at a press conference today, Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek reasoned that the move would pave the way for more youth activities to take place.

The esplanade at Jalan Maju at the riverfront, built in 1988, was once a popular place for recreation but has been left idle and empty in recent years.

“During my teenage years I used to go to the esplanade. Very unfortunately, for the past 10 years, the Rejang Esplanade has been underutilised so it is a very sad thing to see.

“As a local YB, it is also my duty to revive the Rejang Esplanade so that more people will use it,” he said.

Meanwhile, an event titled ‘The Stage’, a platform for youths to showcase their talents will be held for the first time at Rejang Esplanade here from May 27- 28.

Chieng said the event will also allow youths to gain more exposure as well as to work together with professional creative media agencies.

“It is a long-term project which aims to set up an ecosystem by gathering all kinds of talents,” he added.

He expected that with the slogan ‘Dare to Dream’, more than 1,000 youths from here and the nearest towns could participate in the event.

“We would like to attract talents from neighboring towns like Sarikei, Bintulu, and Mukah. We hope they can come and enjoy this youth event,” he added. — DayakDaily
