KUCHING, March 18: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan says Malaysia could build faster and smarter by using the Modular Precast System (MPS), a method where walls, floors, and even entire rooms are prefabricated in factories and then assembled on-site like lego blocks.

Speaking during a site visit to the Federal Integrated Administrative Complex (BGP) in Petra Jaya today, Ahmad highlighted that countries using modern construction systems, including MPS, complete projects much more quickly.

“They are able to finish projects faster because of the construction systems they employ. Among them is the Modular Precast System,” he said.

Ahmad explained that the modular system allows structural components to be manufactured in a controlled environment before being transported and assembled on-site, reducing delays and improving quality.

“I hope the construction industry will see MPS as a future-ready method. For example, we are already using it to build additional classroom blocks in schools nationwide,” he added.

He noted that this approach enables high-density schools to have extra classrooms completed within three to four months, demonstrating the system’s efficiency and potential for wider use.

“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been briefed on this initiative and agreed with the proposal. MPS is now being applied in overcrowded schools. This approach addresses not only labour constraints but also modernises the construction process,” Ahmad said.

Currently, MPS is under trial and review and has not yet been adopted as national construction policy.

“The ongoing trial focuses on building extra classrooms for schools with high student populations, some accommodating two to three thousand students requiring morning and afternoon sessions. MPS helps provide the necessary classrooms much faster,” he explained.

Ahmad concluded that wider adoption of MPS nationwide could accelerate public project timelines, ensure buildings are ready sooner, and enhance service delivery for Malaysians. — DayakDaily
