Build breakwater at Kpg Batu 1 quickly, Putrajaya urged

Pasar Nelayan Kampung Batu 1 in Kuala Baram was flooded this morning.

MIRI, August 8: The federal government has been urged to quickly implement the RM25 million breakwater project at Kampung Batu 1 in Kuala Baram. The village was hit by floods and strong winds this morning.

The boat shed in the village was damaged by the floods because of incoming seawater, said Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the Assistant Minister of Tourism. He visited the place shortly after receiving photos of the damage.

He assured the fishermen there that arrangements had been made to repair the boat shed.

“The breakwater project that has been approved should be implemented as soon as possible. This is urgent because this will affect the safety and livelihood of the fisherman in the area,” said Lee.

The fishermen also told Lee they hoped the implementation of the project could be expedited as the allocation had been approved.

Lee revealed that a consultant had been appointed, while the survey and design work had been completed.

“Tentatively, tender has to be out this year,” he said.
