KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9: Film-makers and animation creators are set to receive a boost under Budget 2027, with over RM130 million allocated to the creative industry alongside measures to support local productions and develop Malay-language artificial intelligence (AI).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the allocation aimed to create jobs, promote Malaysian stories globally and strengthen the country’s creative industry.

“This includes incentives for local and international film and animation productions that shoot in Malaysia, as well as additional incentives for productions that showcase Malaysian culture and national identity,” he said when tabling Budget in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Anwar added that tickets for local films and theatre performances in the federal territories would be fully exempted from entertainment duty from 2027.

He urged state governments to introduce similar measures to support local creative talent.

The government would also strengthen the local animation ecosystem to develop 20 new intellectual properties (IPs) and commercialise Malaysian characters globally, he said.

Meanwhile, the government is stepping up efforts to advance the Malay language in the AI era by mobilising ministries, agencies and educational institutions to contribute accurate, annotated digital language data to the National Language and Literature Agency (DBP).

The initiative aims to strengthen the digital language ecosystem and support the development of homegrown AI technologies rooted in Malaysia’s national identity.

Anwar said the efforts were crucial to ensuring the Malay language kept pace with technological advancements and enabling Malaysia to develop its own AI capabilities. — DayakDaily
