LIMBANG, June 22: The Brunei government, through the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, is aiding Malaysia in the search operation for a soldier feared missing during a survey operation along the border of Limbang and Brunei since last Tuesday.
According to a report by TVS, Bukit Kota assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail stated that the operation to locate Private Muhammad Syafiq Hilmi Abdul Halim, a member of the 7th Battalion of the Border Regiment stationed at Kidurong Camp, Bintulu, has been intensified.
“The military personnel involved in the border survey has been missing for five days.
“Various parties, including Brunei, are assisting in the search operation, which continues as we hope for the safe return of the missing soldier,” he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the 2024 Islamic Women and Family Seminar and Mental Health Awareness at Dewan Bunga Raya today.
Abdul Rahman, who is also Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development, expressed gratitude for the commitment and ongoing efforts of the rescue team in their mission.
Yesterday, the Malaysian Armed Forces confirmed that Muhammad Syafiq went missing on June 18 at about 12pm while providing security escort duty for the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem) Sarawak team conducting a survey from Ulu Tutong to Bebuloh in Limbang, along the Malaysia-Brunei border from June 11 to Sept 2.
Following the incident, immediate efforts to locate him were launched by a team comprising two Malaysian Armed Forces members and five Jupem members, but failed to find the missing soldier.
On June 19, the Malaysian Armed Forces intensified the search efforts with the assistance of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and other agencies coordinated by the National Security Council (MKN), namely the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
Additionally, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) have deployed their assets to support the joint search efforts. — DayakDaily
