KUCHING, July 12: Two siblings were each sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and ten strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for robbing a 44-year-old woman using a parang.
Norsyahrul Ikhmal Haierul, 25, and Mohamad Nurulhisyam Haierul, 23, pleaded guilty to a joint charge read before Judge Musli Abdul Hamid.
They were charged with committing armed robbery using a dangerous weapon, a parang, against a woman, by taking her handbag containing a MyKad, driving licence, insurance card, two mobile phones, cash amounting to RM3,800, and a gold chain worth RM2,500 at a parking lot in Pending Height, Jalan Kuching By-Pass, at around 3:20pm on May 26.
They were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 397 of the same code, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and caning upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, during the incident, the victim was storing items in her car trunk when she was approached by two men riding a motorcycle.
The motorcycle pillion rider approached the victim, and one of them brandished a parang before snatching her handbag.
The estimated loss suffered by the victim was around RM7,000.
The victim lodged a police report for further action and investigation.
It is understood that both accused have previous records involving robbery cases and possession of stolen property.
Meanwhile, in a separate Sessions Court, Norsyahrul Ikhmal was also sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for robbing an 85-year-old man on May 12.
Judge Maris Agan imposed the sentence after Norsyahrul Ikhmal pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code.
According to the charge sheet, he and another man committed group robbery against the 85-year-old man, taking his ATM card near a bistro at around 5.30am on May 12 at Jalan Song.
Based on the facts of the case, the victim was walking near a bistro when two unknown men approached and snatched his shoulder bag.
Additionally, the accused also struck the victim’s body with a wooden stick, causing him to fall, after which both men fled on a motorcycle.
The victim’s belongings, including his MyKad, ATM card, wallet, RM80 in cash, and house keys, were also stolen.
A police report was made for further action, and the investigation revealed that the accused had used the victim’s ATM card to make purchases at several shops in Satok, Central Park, and other areas.
The accused admitted to discarding the victim’s belongings in Sungai Midin after using them.
The prosecution of the case was handled separately by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian and Norshafatihah Nor Azmi, while both accused were not represented by lawyers. — DayakDaily
