KUCHING, Nov 5: The Borneo Cultures Museum (BCM) has earned global recognition, marking a proud moment for Sarawak as its modern, technology-driven approach draws international attention.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the State government had made a deliberate choice to move away from conventional museum concepts and instead focus on creating an engaging, interactive experience enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI).

“When we planned this museum, we did not want to follow the usual approach. In countries such as France, particularly in Paris, their museums have their own way of doing things. We wanted something that would set Sarawak apart,” he told reporters after officiating the grand opening of Hotel Legacy Hill today.

He explained that the museum was designed not only to showcase Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage but also to immerse visitors in technology-driven storytelling.

The integration of AI, he said, has enabled BCM to distinguish itself and positioned it at the forefront of global innovation in cultural presentation.

“Our distinctive approach has gained international recognition, and the Borneo Cultures Museum is now acknowledged as the best in the world,” he said, expressing pride that Sarawak’s creative approach has successfully placed the State on the world map.

Abang Johari, who initiated the project during his tenure as Minister of Tourism, added that BCM’s success demonstrates Sarawak’s ability to embrace modern technology while preserving its cultural identity.

In line with this, he said the State government is currently upgrading the nearby Natural History Museum, which will feature exhibits on the theories of Darwin and Wallace, as well as Sarawak’s diverse biodiversity.

This initiative, he added, will further strengthen Sarawak’s standing as a global centre for culture, heritage, and science.

At the same time, Abang Johari highlighted that improving air connectivity remains crucial in attracting more international visitors, noting that Sarawak must be easily accessible to fully capitalise on its growing global profile.

“If we can enhance flight connectivity and make travel to Sarawak easier, more tourists from around the world will come,” he said, adding that the State government is working to establish more direct international routes to support both tourism and investment growth.
