Bomba extinguish bush fires sparked by farmland clearing work

MIRI, Jan 31: Farmland clearing works by local farmers caused three bush fire incidents in Miri today.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Law Poh Kiong in a statement said his department received the first call at 9.50 am which occurred at SMK Baru, followed by the second incident at 11.30 am at Jalan Kiambang in Lutong Baru, and another one at 1.06 pm in front of Daiken Factory in Kuala Baram.

According to Law, the bush fire incident that occurred nearby SMK Baru and in Jalan Kiambang in Lutong Baru, both incident involving a total of four acres of land, was successfully extinguished by the firefighters, while the operation was still ongoing for the one that occurred in front of Daiken Factory in Kuala Baram.

“The fire was caused by the clearing works done by the local farmers in their farmlands,” he said in the statement today.

In a related incident, Law also noted that two other cases involving a fire occurred later in front of Pro Guard Technology at Eastwood Industrial at Jalan Miri By pass at 4.20pm and in Lorong 6, Jalan Jee Foh.

He said the first incident involved a garbage dump and the second one at a roadside in Jalan Jee Foh involving a small area. —DayakDaily.
