SIBU, Jan 17: Two firemen saved the life of a 22-year-old hotel guest at Jalan Foochow by coaxing him not to jump off a three-storey shophouse today.
Sibu Fire and Rescue acting chief, Wan Kamaruddin Wan Ahmad, said his department received a distress call at 5.30pm regarding a man who wanted to jump off a building.
A team of eight firemen rushed to the scene. They were beefed up by 10 policemen and four from the Civil Defence Force.
“Two firemen went up to the man and spent close to 15 minutes, persuading the man to think over and not jump down,” he said.
The man from Sebauh, who was already sitting on the ledge of the window, finally surrendered himself. Kamaruddin said the man was later handed over to the police for further action.
According to a spokesman from the hotel, the man had checked in the hotel at noon time yesterday.
“It was learned that the man was believed to be high on certain substance, as he could be heard saying that somebody wanted to attack him. This had prompted him to go up to the third floor of the building to end his life,” he said. — DayakDaily
