KANOWIT, Nov 29: The lifeless body of a 55-year-old man has been recovered by the authorities after he was swept away by powerful currents when his boat, laden with durians, sank in Sungai Kanowit.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak reported that the search and rescue team, consisting of firefighters and police, located the deceased approximately 12km downstream from the site where the boat went under.
Following the retrieval, the body was transported to Majau jetty and handed over to the police for identification by the victim’s family.
The tragic incident unfolded on Monday (Nov 27), when a married couple, navigating the river after departing from their farm by boat, came across the ill-fated durian-laden vessel on the same route.
Upon hearing cries for help, the couple spotted the sunken boat, situated approximately 17m from the riverbank and 100m from the RH Adau Baling jetty along Jalan Bunut, Bukong Jagoi.
Acting swiftly, the witnesses rushed to the scene and successfully rescued one of the victims, who was clinging to the submerged boat at that critical moment.
The survivor, a 72-year-old man, was promptly taken to the hospital by his children for necessary medical attention. — DayakDaily
